Teatri Maja Residents was the industrial and business quarter of the heart of the city during the first Republic of Estonia. The original building was destroyed during the March bombing of the Second World War, but fortunately, part of the stone wall of the first floor has survived to this day. The building was rebuilt in 1952 and the Tallinn Oblast Government and then the Library of the Academy of Sciences of the Estonian SSR operated here. The building's main facade, vestibule, main staircase and hall, together with the interior design, have been recognized as cultural monuments and have been restored to their original form.
